The relation is pure mathematics, and so can't be debunked. Of course
there are distributed effects, that change the ideal prediction a bit,
but the fundamental issue is that voltage is not so important in the
production of sparks. Once the breakdown limit is reached the voltage
does not rise much, and what is needed is a lot of current to keep the
spark growing, and it has to come from the distributed capacitance of
the secondary system, or from a large C2 as you say.
