If the goal is to "cut down on noise", one needs to understand that the
majority of the acoustic noise in any well-performing coil comes not from
the gap, but from the topload discharges.  Unless you don't want sparks,
you're stuck with the noise.

I agree on part about the noise and I'm sure many others do so as well. I have a WW1 quenched spark gap which works very well and if there is any breakout at all there isn't any audible buzzing from it. Much quieter than even small streamers. Same goes for the Victoreen gas protector tubes at lower powers. Haven't seen any mention of them lately because most guys are going for bigger and better instead of smaller and neater and easy to find a place for.
