I think the discussion needs to address the questionable rationale for doing this in the first place. If the goal is to "cut down on noise", one needs to understand that the majority of the acoustic noise in any well-performing coil comes not from the gap, but from the topload discharges. Unless you don't want sparks, you're stuck with the noise.
