I settled on 50nF because that was the easiest size MMC to make out of the capacitors I had on hand at the time.  I know, pretty technical, huh?  Over the years, I've tried adding or removing a few nF just to see what happens to spark length, but 50nF seems to works best for my twin MOT setup.  At 37nF, for example, I got a definite decrease in performance, and at 60nF, I got no increase in performance.  That's been about the full extent of my experimentation.

No, resonance is not an issue.  I'm sure at the low voltage and high current I'm using, 50nF is way, way smaller than mains resonant.  In fact, I probably get multiple firings on each 60Hz DC pulse.
