I agree with you there. I personally think would be
high voltage researchers should start out with
Electrostatic machines before going on to mains
powered devices like tesla coils. That's what I did
over 12 years ago and I think it has really paid off.
It taught me to respect high voltages/currents and
safely how to avoid getting shocked. I learned how
different potentials can jump diffent distances to
find ground (and sometimes that can mean you!).
