Garry,
The rat-tat-tat sound is caused by using large value caps in combo
with wide gap spacings with NST's. The gap is not firing at every
1/2 cycle, (it's skipping some half cycles) and this type of
operation can destroy the NST over time. The safety gaps
are probably set too wide also. If you set the main gaps narrower,
the sound should smooth out, and you'll be able to set the safety
gaps closer.
