RE: Toroid = shorted turn ?

I am surprised and gratified by the many and diverse responses my query
generated, the list is certainly an educational place to hang out ! Thanks
to all, and I continue to watch with interest.

My little NST / SW cap system still gives only 12 in sparks, and I'm
convinced there are several more fruitful avenues of improvement to pursue
before the toroid effect becomes significant for my case. If I get back to
this point, my first experiment would be to instrument a gapped toroid and
mount it on an insulated pole in my system. I might even sacrifice a
secondary to measure M and k as Malcom suggests, and could then instrument
the top few turns and drive the primary with a signal generator while
shorting and opening the toroid gap. I realize that even if a perfectly
conducting toroid acts as a 'shading coil' on the top of the resonator, its
not necessarily a bad thing !

In the meantime, I will take Richard Hull's advice and ' damn the torpedoes,
full speed ahead ! '
