If I were you, and if you have the room, I would leave the form at
72" tall, and wind the whole thing with wire.  I would use maybe
number 18awg wire close wound for about 1600 turns or so, or
maybe space wound a little.  Then I would run the coil at 120
bps with a sync gap and a huge toroid and a large cap, and it 
should outperform most other coils of it's kVA rating.
