 No. Varying the speed DEFINTELY makes a HUGE difference. I've been known to push my poor little 60 Hz motor up to 300 Hz for quite a few bps. Forget about peaks and zero crossings with async.

 Async with variable speed, whether AC or DC motor. My sweet spot changes with every tweak, so a constant speed async would likely never hit the sweet spot.
