My toroid is 6" x 1.5" with the center-line sitting 2" above the top winding of the secondary. My breakout point is 4" in length. My breakout point is made of brass and ground to a fairly sharp point. It does breakout fairly early. What size toroid do you use? What breakout point length do you use? Have you found the positioning of the toroid to be critical? I can easily go higher but not lower. Lower would take some work. I assumed that lower would be better to provide better corona shielding to the top of the secondary. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Reeland" <chrisreeland@xxxxxxxxx> To: "Tesla Coil Mailing List" <tesla@xxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2018 9:59:37 AM Subject: Re: [TCML] VTTC MOT question Hi Steve, Hey, I want to ask if you have been along the way during tuning, have you at all tried changing the length of the breakout point at all? Out of curiosity what is the current length? Could you also give your toroid size again? I don't remember what it is. This does make a difference. As I have increased power levels I have been adjusting this. You don't want it too long, it will breakout earlier as you turn up the variac, and the spark length will suffer. Too short, and it will breakout later and suffer again. It does make some interesting "spoiled" multiple very "branchy" sparks though. You want to find a happy "medium". Even if you think you have it, try other tuning changes, and try varying this again. With experimenting, you should find best length at the power level and tuning changes you are currently at. Makes a difference, at least on my coils.
