Re: [Bulk] RE: [TCML] Pictures of Tesla Magnifier

Hey---

Our first TC in high school used 18 one gallon mayonnaise jars coated with al foil outside and salt water inside. We later put foil inside. Pretty cumbersone, but they looked cool and made a nice buzzing sound and the corona around the edge of the foil was pretty. They never failed. Now I use a 0.05 uF 50kV Maxwell that has given excellent performance for 20 years with 3x 9/60 NSTs in parallel. That gives a p-p of 25kV. Pretty conservative.

James,

Hmm, that's strange because I have some surplus
.1 uFd, 75 kV rated Maxwells (cat# 31885), of
which I use just one in my large SG coil outfit and
I've never been able to detect notable external sur-
face warmth to the touch above ambient temperature,
even after several minutes of non-stop firing at re-
spectable power levels (10 kVA+) from my 14.4 kV
pig. There doesn't seem to be any "delayed onset" of
the internal heat reaching the surface a few minutes
after shut down, either. Certainly can't give that rave
review for most of the previous caps that I've used
prior to the Maxwell unit, though. :^0 {with the ex-
ception of that 100 nFd, 25 kV(AC) rated, BNZ
series Plastic Capacitors unit that I have}.
The downside to it is the very wimpy, 1" long by
1/4"x20 TPI threaded stud end terminals as well as the
obviously brittle phenolic exterior containment. Its "guts"
are tough but externally, it seems mechanically fragile. :^0
Don't drop it on a concrete floor ;^O

Really, I should proof read this stuff. I was thinking 100pps. If you stay very conservative on the Maxwells, you can get by with the 1pps caps. They are close to death in Tesla coil operation however. I have had most of my TC problems with caps. I have a Maxwell 80nF@100kV cap. It gets hot at 10KV. I had no luck with homemade caps either. Both rolled and plate types died; some quietly, some not. James

Hi Jame

"100Hz Maxwells"? Could that possibly be a typo?
Maybe 100 nFd or 100 kV rated Maxwells? Or
could you possibly be referring to a 100 pps rating?
Please clarify for this befuzzled reader ;^]

Many years ago, these caps came on the market and I bought a bunch. I think
the guy had several hundred. I think they were military surplus. I guess
100Hz Maxwells are your best bet. I have spent too much time and trouble on
caps.

That's sweet! It does seem rather bullet proof.
Where did you get them, I have been having trouble sourcing capacitors for
my own coil is why I ask.
