I remember the first TC I saw in the mid 60's. It was the attention getter for a series technology show at a local theater conducted by a Dr.Speak. Thought it was very interesting. Anyway, his top load was a large stainless steel salad bowl which was, if I remember correctly, about 30". It sat atop his coil right side up and the streamers jumped from the rim.

Not a bad idea, but I wouldnt remove the paint. Those things are made from
mild steel and would rust within days in any climate.
I would instead grind off any sharp points and protrusions and cover it in
aluminum tape.
You could even paper mache it first, sand it down, hit it with a can of
clear lacquer, then cover it with aluminum tape.
Or again, leave the paint on it and cover it with copper or aluminum screen.
If it were aluminum under the paint I would say strip it, but I think the
steel would become problematic as it oxidizes.
The shape should work out just fine for a pseudo-toroidal top load.
I think that its a very good idea. Way to think outside the box man!
I love it when people find a way to work with what they have...
