Re: [TCML] TC Application - Neighbors

Hi Miles,

As the builder of the Green Monster (the other Miles can tell
you about it, as he has witnessed it in action), I suppose my
personal experience qualifies me a bit as an "adviser" on this
subject matter ;^)

I think the main issue is to just use common sense. As you
have already alluded, very late night operation, especially du-
ring the work week, is not a wise thing to do and will possibly
win you an introduction to your local law enforcement repre-
sentative(s) ;^0 On the occasions that I roll mine out on the
driveway to fire off, I virtually always run it on either a Friday
or Saturday evening (not as much chance of disturbing the
sleep of an early rising worker). Also, I generally keep my
individual run times to < 2 minutes and the entire operational
period to under 1 1/2 hours. I'm usually always wrapping up
and rolling the beast back into my driveway by 10 PM, even
though it be a weekend night. The extended daylight hours of
summer would tend to limit my outdoor operation to within the
90 minute range of total "roll out to roll in" time too, since I al-
most always wait till after sunset to begin sparking, anyway.
(I suppose a 10 PM "deadline" for closing operation could
pose a problem for the "northern exposure" coilers during
summer months who only wish to fire their coils out-
doors in ambient darkness) but most "temparate zone"
coilers can work within these parameters for outdoor firing.

Of course, safety is tantemount issue when operating such a
potentially lethal device and you should NEVER operate it
outdoors without being able to clearly view the coil and a suf-
ficiently wide area around it so as to be able to quickly kill it
if an observing bystander moves up "too close" to it! This means
that you must be very vigilant at the control panel! Obviously,
a large lightning bolt throwing machine is going to draw some
attention and neighbors will likely be curious. I simply keep
then frequency of my "firing" down to the point that it remians
a curiousity instead of a nuisance with my neighbors. ;^)

Also, July 4th or possibly NewYear's Eve is a good excuse
for firing off such a "noise maker" ;^)

Happy sparking,
David

I need a few pointers from the experienced home coilers. What is the proper
etiquette for introducing a TC to neighbors? I’m not a late night person so
that’s not going to be an issue. I hope to have a first light of my coil this weekend and fear I may have to move outside to run at full power and I have no
idea how loud my coil will be.
4 * 12kV / 30mA NSTs Paralleled
Richard Quick 5 electrode spark gap (total gap of .14”) w/300 CFM blower
60nF Tank
4.5x20” secondary
Double toroid (3x12” & 4x18”)

Thanks for any advise.

Roger that. I've gone my whole life without smoking...etc. Don't need to fry
my lungs because I'm coiling. Especially while I'm tweaking the tuning or the
gap, I get a garage full of O3 before I realize what's going on.

I've been nervous about neighbors - alas the coil is loud. But as long as I'm not buzzing around in the middle of the night, I should be ok. I'm only about
1/4" mile away from a major highway (California Rt 17), which provides a
constant background noise unless there's beach traffic on Friday. Everyone has
thick windows. I'm probably overly worried.

Joe
