Re: [TCML] VFD motor

A VFD is rated to drive 3-phase motors of a given horse power. Don't try running a 2HP motor with a 1HP VFD. Also, the motors should be rated for frequency drive use (winding insulation). They are "not" synchronous motors but vary their speed to maintain a given frequency. For example, if you want the motor to run at 60Hz, the VFD will attempt to maintain that frequency based on the direct feedback from the motor or the motor currents as the load changes. This has nothing to do with being synchronous.

VFD's for rotary spark gaps is in the application of varying the rotor speed during operation.

BTW, the VFD's which accept 1-ph in and provide 3-ph out are usually lower HP (roughly 1.5 or less).

Any 3 phase motor can be used with a VFD. Some VFD's can be used on single phase lines to run 3 phase motor. I did an installation where they need 35hp motor to drive pump. Used a Allen Bradley VFD to do the job. Power company upset, but had to live with it. They wanted to be paid for running 3Phase line. Al Shumate In a message dated 1/16/2009 9:51:54 A.M. Quick question guys,
Does a motor to be used with a VFD have to be modified for
synchronous operation or can it be any old induction motor. Thanks.
