Back in high school, some 40 years ago we were still being taught tube  
theory and would plot our own curves on vacuum tubes, and then design a  circuit 
around that. Just don't ask me how now because that was a looooong time  ago, 
but it wasn't that hard using a variable voltage source and a couple of  meters.

FB OM! That's the way I remember it, when I worked in our  high school
station (W2CLE) 50 years ago this week. But going back on my  notes to
2000, I could not find a single reference to design  parameters/theory

any of the VTTC threads. A lot of it seems to be  cut and try or just
