Re: Arc/Spark RE: [TCML] Magnetic Quenching

In engineering a _spark_ is quite distinct from an _arc_.
An arc oscillator is (noisy) CW, a spark gap provides damped
waves. An arc (in operating range) has negative resistance,
this allows gain, which allows oscillation: CW oscillation.

With respect, the usage of the terms 'arc' and 'spark' in
Tesla Coil discussions is rather too lose.

Correct. As a matter of interest I have a picture saved [somewhere - can't find it] of one of Pulsen's labs ca 1906 which shows what is obviously a CW TC, presumably powered by an arc. Obviously doable and a properly function arc should be at least 50% efficient, probably as good as any of the VTC's or spark excited coils. On the other hand it's not as simple as a straight spark which works so well and is so cheap and easy.
