RE: [TCML] Looking for a nive plate transformer

Hi David,

I grant you that a plate transformer won't saturate well into its rating. I
have a 5KV 3p plate transformer, but it hasn't moved in a long time since in
weighs in at >75 LBS :-) It has a core like a small pig.

I have (4) 833a's and original Johnson heat sinks and sockets which are
getting rare. By the time I get to this, I'll have to get the neighbor kid
to move the transformer for me ;-) It's to be my can't do much other big
iron coil project. I have all the components along with the staccato
circuit. I also have a navy plate transformer if you are interested; it is
short of 5KV though without over volting it.

Hi Greg, all,

MOTs are great when used for their intended purpose - to
drive the magnetron of a microwave oven. However, I would
have to agree with Phillip when it comes to their suitability as
power transformers for VTTCs. They are indeed built with
"just barely enough to get by" as far as core mass and cross
section vs. their VA or kVA rating. Think about it, a plate
transformer that had an equivalent ~2 kV @ 1 amp rating
to an MOT would likely be 4 to 5 times heavier that the
MOT.

David
