I also perfer the gap across the transformer due to safety reasons.  Having the gap across the transformer allows the capacitor to discharge trough the transformer if the circuit is not energized.  Although I wouldn't depend on it, it does provide an added level of safety.

Hi Bob,

Spark gap across NST is best. Less havoc on the NST. Terry Fritz did 
some great testing on this particular situation. The gap across the NST 
was far better from a component protection standpoint. Either would do 
well a far as spark performance.
