Re: [TCML] Regulating HV (Australian)
In my case the kind humorous scenario was sort of as follows:
Kid somewhere, sees Tesladownunder website and asks Dad "are 8 foot sparks
safe"
Dad is inspector with Dept of Energy Safety (DES). Does a quick search,
finds my name and home address and sends a local inspector.
Local inspector walks up my drive unannounced and speaks to my wife. I am
at work.
Arrangement is made for inspection when I am present.
I make circumspect enquiries regarding standards. Mild panic ensues.
EVERYTHING I do is illegal.
But there is a small loop hole. Their jurisdiction sort of ends once the
voltage of mains drops below 50 volts AC. Hmm....
Eureka moment: run everything off 50VAC.
Rushes to buy second arc welder (all give 240VAC to 50VAC). Connect back to
back ie 240 to 50 to 240.
Hide everything else except Tesla coil and battery stuff.
Inspection day:
Do you get payment for this - "no"
Do you do public displays - "no"
Do you run anything from the mains "Yes - an arc welder which drops things
down to 50V so I can use it safely and legally. Here is the 50 V line and
here is my Tesla coil. Let me show you."
Inspector "thats cool - passed"
Well sort of like that. He seemed satisfied that I wasn't an idiot (fooled
him there) and left, leaving a copy of the regs.

I believe
that Peter was referring to the fact that there ARE such regulations in
Australia (about
what sorts of electrical equipment mere common people are allowed to have
and modify)
