Most primaries in nsts use 12 or 14 AWG wire. Secondaries are #40 or #42 AWG. Usually 1 Volt per turn, so 1/2 of the xmfr at 6 kV on a 12 kV center-tap grounded nst, would require approx 6,000 turns of the very small guage wire. This is why most of them are wound on a computer controlled lathe or similar machine.

If you can pick up a used nst for $50 - $70 you are way ahead of the curve in terms of labor, time, and materials cost.

when you get it unpotted try to determine what wire gauge is used for the primary secondary. i am just curious as i am going to wind a coil and it would be good info to know.
