Here in South Florida the only good grounds are the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf
of Mexico, and believe me the authorities get pissed when you ground Tesla
Coils to them!
For small coils, and this probably isn't the best logic, I made a large
"sort-of-rolled cap" with only one metal conductor and some plastic
dielectric. The result is just a large surface area of metal insulated from
itself, like a large "capacity" but not a "capacitor". I use it for indoor
demos where grounding of small units isn't always convenient. I'm sure its
not the best thing to do, but it seems to be better than nothing in a pinch.
I've also tried this arrangement for smaller bipolar cylinder coils
(separately wound) under oil, where I didn't want to drill any holes in the
bottom of a container to run a ground wire (and probably eventually oil on
the floor)...
Its probably the equivalent of using the VW bus in the last example but
forgetting to bury it...?
