Hello,

If you try a bipolar arrangement by placing the primary in the middle of the
secondary (and leaving the secondary "free floating" without a ground), you
might want to try for fun this little arrangement:
http://www.electrotherapymuseum.com/2007/SOComplete/index.htm

It doesn't look like much, but its a triple-terminal arrangement for a Tesla
Coil. One end of the secondary is connected to a plate and the other end to
a ball. A third "dummy" terminal in the middle has a plate and ball and is
connected to nothing. By adjusting the plates and ball terminals you can
get a neat variety of effects. The plates add some capacity in series with
the arcing output, and depending on how you adjust them you can get pure
corona from the plates, a hot arc between the ball terminals, corona on one
side and sparks on the other, or hot sparks on the ball side and capacitive
sparks on the plate side.

It doesn't seem like such an arrangement would effect much, but in person
there are a lot of subtle differences you can observe, hear, and smell in
the discharges. Tons of ozone from the plates too!

This concept was originally built for Dr. Strong in 1901 by Earle Ovington -
then a student at MIT. Earle went on to work with Edison, become friends
with Tesla, and later become the first US Air Mail Pilot. He also was the
first person to send a wireless message from an airplane. There is a nice
photo of him in Harry Goldman's book on Kenneth Strickfadden.
