Glen,

Surprising as it may seem, you can add an external inductance in series with
your primary with only an insignificant decrease in overall efficiency.  Try
adding a few turns of, say, #8 insulated wire around a 4" piece of PVC in
series with your primary.  This is called an "off axis" coil, because
usually you don't want it magnetically coupled to your primary or secondary.
