The 30 inch lawn ornaments will not work for VDGRFs.  You need a 
smoothly curved "entrance hole" for the belt into the sphere.  This 
usually requires spinnings like we use --- $900.00 per piece!

You can, however, use paper-mache to build a large terminal and cover 
it with Home Depot alum. foil.  I've made one at 52 inch dia. that 
worked very well.  Formed it over fine mesh screen over plywood 2 x 2 
x 1/4 inch framework.
