How about putting the electrodes in the freezer (or on dry ice) to contract
them up enough so that they fit into the holes while they are cold?

That will work, although you'd have to check the coefficient of expansion of the two materials to make sure. The other thing to check is that the holes are perfectly round. I've done the "thermal shrink fit" thing before, but the two items were slightly oval, so while it was an interference fit in one orientation, it was a slip fit in another. Imagine our surprise when it came apart!
