Boris and all,

I do have all of them. A couple are more "popular" and entertaining than others, but all are quite good. The best for scholarly lightning researchers are "The Lightning Discharge" (1987) and "Lightning: Physics and Effects" (2003). While the former book is a bit dated, the latter book is quite up to date. Dover has reprinted The Lightning Discharge in a paperback version that sells for ~$12.00.

There's no doubt that the most thorough, up to date, and scholarly treatment is the later book which is coauthored by Vladimir A. Rakov. This is truly a monster of a book measuring 9" x 11" x 1.5" and 687 pages. Although it's relatively expensive, it can be found on the used book market for $150.00 - $175. It is also available at many university libraries and local interlibrary loan systems. The following is a more detailed description of the book

Just about every aspect of lightning is covered. It's twenty chapters cover lightning incidence, structure of lightning producing clouds, negative, positive, and bipolar lightning, triggered lightning, winter lightning in Japan, intercloud lightning, lightning and airborne vehicles, thunder, modeling of lightning processes, electromagnetic effects, Schumann resonances, and whistlers, lightning effects on middle and upper atmospheres, lightning effects on the chemistry of the atmosphere, extraterrestrial lightning, lightning location systems, deleterious effects of lightning and protective techniques, lightning hazards to humans and animals, and ball lightning. Each chapter contains an extensive bibliography.

This is not a book you curl up with for a few evenings. Plan to spend several months poring over the details contained within this one... :^)

Best regards,

Bert

I searched for these titles at amazon.com and found
there were 4 different books on lightning authorized
by Martin Uman.
1."Lightning" ,320p,1967.
2."The Lightning Discharge",377p,1987.(The book I own)
3."All About Lightning"
4."Lightning:Physics and Effects",680p,2003.

1 and 2 are not quite all the same.
Which one do folks prefer?
While these two are available at reasonable price of
~$10,the book 4 is priced $220!
It must be so darn good or printed in silver and
gold!
Regards,
Boris
