Doesn't say they're going for a utility patent (the kind you're 
thinking of).  Maybe they're getting a design patent on the 
patterning of the stock?

It's also not unheard of to file a really lame application, so that 
you can claim patent pending, never expecting a patent grant because 
the product's market life is shorter than the time to issue a patent. 
[Although these days, they seem to grant patents on all comers, and 
let the infringers fight it out]
