Hi Steve
You can take a given length of wire and make a stuby inductor with a
tiny top end capacitance or a tall skinny coil with a very large top
end capacitance.
The short stubby inductor will win on the inductance but loose on
capacitance and a short skinny inductor may win on capacitance but
loose on inductance.
Tooth pick inductors with immense top end capacitance are poor
performers from what we have observed.
Dr.Resonance has posted emperical ranges of h/d that perform
exceedingly well. I have complete confidence that his h/d ranges are
correct, as he has built about a zillion coils.
