Well, in a standard gap the spacing is close enough to allow a certain
voltage to jump it.
If the gap is too wide the voltage across the cap goes way up. It can go
high enough to blast your cap or burninnate your nst windings.
The thing about rotary gaps is that they prevent spark until the electrode
is close enough.
So the longer the electrodes are out of alignment the higher the voltage
across the cap. Too slow and the cap gets over volted. This is better
