maybe I am missing something, but I think it's quite clear:

If you charge you cap over one half cycle and the gap does not fire, it does
not dicharge the next half.cycle but adds the voltage of your xformer to the
charging voltage...and kill your NST or cap
Sub-120BPS or little above can cause real surging problems, once my 200BPS
SRSG started spinning down while HV was still full on ( motor failure ) and
there were dome really very loud bangs wih the safety-gaps firing and other
unpleasant occourances.... ;-)
This is another point why synchronous operation is more usefull at low BPS
and the benefits vanish over 300 or 400BPS....

The static gap stays always some milimetres apart, your ARSG at the wrong
position ( electrodes moved apart ) may require some tens of kilovolts to
fire ...and by chance it will. In Microsim you can safely see how far
voltages can ring up over a few cycles.....
