They are often welded together by resistance heating. To join pipes you push
the ends into a sleeve also made of HDPE that contains resistance wire and
has a couple of lugs on top. You hook the lugs up to a transformer and pass
a low voltage, high current through the wire. The sleeve and the pipes melt
together into one single mess of plastic creating a very solid and leakproof
joint.

I have also seen them joined using bolted joints made of metal and rubber,
but this is usually just when you need to join the plastic pipe to a metal
one.
