Robert,
Getting "slightly zapped" from any grounded metal item is par for the
course. In fact, you are zapping your variacs because you are acting like
an antenna and are picking up enough RF from your coil to generate tiny
sparks. If yoou hold a florescent tube and touch any grounded object, such
as your variac case, the lamp will be brighter, indicating you are the
source of the energy into the lamp.
Might be a good idea to get farther away from your coil, or just be careful
not to bump grounded or large metal things.
