UV from the primary gap can do evil things to

Also, they typically provide some level of physical
protection against flying debris if something
goes worng.
(hint: even minimal safety glasses will stop a
0.22 short bullet. They are good at what they do.)
Also, as noted, consider hearing protection,
appropriate to size of coil.
