Hey Ed,
   I use to stretch the duct out but don't anymore.  You'll get a smoother
toroid if you buy more to make the complete circle without stretching it and
then covering it with AL tape.  It sounds like the type of AL duct you have
is different from mine.  Mind you, mine will dent but not that easy.
