ReRe: wire AWG and safe current draw

Actually running #10 would theoretically be ok depending on what insulation
was used. The NEC states that -at- 90° c, thhn, thhw, thwn, and several others are
rated -at- 40amps. The footnote to 310.16 specifies that it shall be protected -at-
30 amps. This is true for branch circuit and general feeders. The 40 amp rating
is used for all calculations, however you would be suprised how many times I
have found #10 wire in buildings and houses feeding 60, and 70 amp loads. And
it's been there for years.
Oh well, so much for my rantings.
