That sounds kinda like a gap I gap I built a while
back using an 1800 rpm sync motor mounted vertically
on a 12" x 12" x 12" wooden box. However, mine was
thrown together and not made pretty. I had to rotate
the disc to change the phase angle (This was before
the John Freau phase adjuster.)

As to your problem, I've never run mine without a coil
hooked up, but I can tell you that if the timing isn't
fairly close, it makes a terrible racket. It's
probably good to use a safety gap when playing with
this. Of course, if you use John Freau's phase
shifter, it should be easier to adjust as you slowly
bring up the coil's power.
