Ed: this is a high impedance system so your load changes your voltage out.
The breakdown voltage is a function of the radius of curve between your
point and the cup. The larger the area of the cup the more current available
up to 1/2 sphere. a point plate rectifier has no constant radius so the
effiency of current transpher drops off sharpely. A fine wire inside a tube
also works, but has a sharp low voltage starting point before it rectifies.
This is a built in voltage drop constant. The point has less start voltage
drop point voltage. The wire pipe system can be pressurized to reduce size.
