If you bring the motor speed up slowly with a variac you should be able to
hear the rotor "lock in". When it's not "locked in" you'll hear the motor
"beating" or "hunting". Same thing happens but in reverse when you lower
the variac voltage. You'll hear the rotor fall out of sync and start
"hunting".
If you do this under a fluorescent light you should be able to see when the
rotor locks and unlocks. What you see and what you hear should "jive".
