RE: cap from avery sheet protectors

Hello again,

Today I was working with my idea to use avery sheet protectors to make a cap
again. I put 8.5"x9" sheets of foil with a tab on them into 17 sheet
protectors and put a blank one between the layers, I put my textbooks on top
again and ran it try with my MOT. I must be getting close to tuned because I
now get 7" arcs to a ungrounded rod (im in my house) when I was only getting
2" arcs with the MOT cap I will measure the capacitance when I get a chance.
total cost to make this cap was $1.20, I had the sheet protectors but needed
some foil.

I realize that MMCs are the way to go for a really robust cap, I made a mmc
from 6 1uf 250v metalized poly caps, 2 strings of 3 and it worked good for
10 second runs with a long break, but some people just don't have the cash
for a mmc and this seems to be a good temporary cap that is dirt cheap to
make. I can run mine dry because its only a mot but nst would need to be in
oil I suspect and have more blank sheets between the sheets with foil in
them

Hello all

Last night I was messing with my coil and managed to destroy my microwave
cap I don't have the money to make an MMC
so I looked around and found a box of 100 avery clear sheet protectors you
put in a three ring binder. Anyway I cut
some Aluminum foil into 8.5"x10" sheets with 2" thick tabs then stuck them
into the sheet protectors. I only made 9
to test and compressed the cap together with some heavy textbooks and
measured the capacitance at 35.4nf. It worked
lasted longer then I expected it to with a MOT connected to it but it did
arc through the plastic after about 10min.
I just though I would share my experiment with the list as an alternative
that people may want to try if they don't
have the cash for a MMC. a box of 50 avery sheet protectors is like $12.00
and you could put a blank one between the
sheets with foil in them for extra insulation and then put oil in it to
further add insulation

please excuse anything in this message that makes no sense, its 1:30AM and I
am very tired
