Jim,
The roller bearings are probably some kind of high carbon or stainless
steel. I used stainless in a spark gap a while gap and I can assure you
that in the presence of ozone/heat it is not "stainless." I was rather
quickly corroded/eroded and I imagine that the roller bearings are not
stainless and would fare even worse. Steel is also more resistive than
common spark gap materials like copper.
