Drew, Please use caution. This PT is not ment to have the primary
(secondary, actually) over-volted, if rated for 120V then you are probibly
safe up to 140-150 Volts max, before you saturate the core. If you apply
300V to the 120V side you WILL see the magic smoke (or worse). Before you
do anymore testing I STRONGLY urge you to install a 20 amp quick blow
fuse on the house side of your variac, this may save your variac (from
further damage) and help prevent you from melting your house wiring, a 15
amp thermal fuse might not be a bad idea either (with the quick
blow). This PT is a bit low voltage for a standard Tesla coil, but would
be great for a Vacuum tube coil.
