Yes, these transformers were quite popular.  Seriesing them has a few
problems (even under oil).  However, consider... they cost $50 each
(surplus), have relatively few sources (H&R and C&H are the two I know of).
If you string 3 or 4 together, you're looking at $200 in transfomer costs,
plus a fair amount of work and fabrication to put it into a usable package.
For the same $200, you can probably find a potential or distribution (pole)
transformer that will be more rugged, etc.
