All of the ones I have dismantled (about 20 or so..) have been pretty much
the same. There are 4 basic topologies:
1) DIAC as threshold element in series with gate
2) neon bulb in series with gate (only older ones from the '70s)
3) QUADRAC as switch element (essentially a diac and triac in one TO-220
package)
4) series choke or not...
5) Small trim pot in parallel (for fan speed controllers, to set "minimum
speed" to something that will actually start the fan moving)
