Just strip the wires for perhaps 1/4", tin and lap joint them, and you
will have only a small bump which won't hurt at all. I usually fold a
strip of bond paper, perhaps 1" wide, over the splice, then wrap turns
over it as I continue winding. The joint is then varnished along with
the rest of the winding. Probably doesn't make a difference, but it
looks slightly neater if you do it right, and perhaps forms a pocket
into which a little more varnish flows.
