I Remember reading in "The Inventions and Writings of Nikola Tesla"  by T.C.
Martin that Tesla had tried carbon rod gap expirments.  If I remember correctly
it was in the lecture section. He discarded the idea and found that rounded
polished brass gaps worked best.
