I tested my new six inch coil this week. The results were mixed. I was
using two H&R transformers in antiparrallel. I was only able to get the
spark gap to fire after shorting out three of five gaps in my vaccuum
gap. After removing the bridge rectifier, and the filter cap the gap
would not fire at all! Gap spacing is only 30mils. To remedy this
situation I have ordered two dc filter caps. This will let me change the
circuit over to a full wave doubler circuit. The filter caps are double
capacitors. That is to say there are two 5uf caps in each can. I plan to
use two of these double caps in series for a total capacitance in the
doubler of 1.25uf.
  Tests with my 12Kv supply and a much smaller cap were much better.
Although I had to tap out to the final turn to get in tune. Discharges
were only about 24". I had to limit the size of the torus to stay in
tune. I could not use the cap that was designed for the coil for fear of
blowing my 12Kv supply. The tank cap is 55nf and the 12Kv supply is only
180ma which is too great a mismatch.
  After I build the doubler circuit for the H&Rs I'll give it another
shot.......
