Someone wrote he wouldn´t use PE for insualtion because it would melt.

I sort of have to agree/disagree with this. First of all PE only melts at
temperatures above 100°C. If your xformer gets hotter than this, you will
start cooking the Formvar on the wire. I think a safe xformer temp would be
around 75°C.

 My insulation scheme is paper-PE-paper. This helps the oil wick up and sort
of protects the PE from coming into direct contact with the windings should
they get hot.
