In order to utilize the coil as an electrostatic source you would need to
rectify the output. Van De Graff generators are electrostatic DC devices,
which gives them their peculiar properties, like inducing charge in nearby
objects and causing bits of cloth to shuttle between the generator and
oppositely charged objects. If the output of this generator were AC it
could not create any NET charge in any one object, since the polarity
changes rapidly.
