I have had excellent results over the years with using well-seasoned
pine, boiled in paraffin to drive out all of the air.  When the stuff
solidifies it is easy to cut and realtively impervious to moisture.  I
always impregnate if before cutting to size, as it shrinks somewhat in
the process due to the water being driven out by the heat.  It's cheap
and easy to try.  You have to watch the temperature of the paraffin
because, if it is too hot, it will scorch the wood.  Still usable but
not pretty.  One thing to remember, though, is that the paraffin is
quite inflammable and you need to be careful.
