Re: [TCML] Richard Burnett´s resonant charging ideas confirmed

Hello Jan,

I haven't built a resonant charging DC coil so I can't comment on that.

There are still plenty of spark gappers out there, including me. I like the relative simplicity and reliability of SGTCs. It seems as if most of the SSTCs/DRSSTCs that I have seen eventually blow up their MOSFETs/IGBTs and more. I've blown one up myself. I'm not interested in constantly making repairs. My pole transformer powered RSGTC has been in use for 3 years now with no maintenance.

The only 2 advantages I can see for SSTCs/DRSSTCs are greater portability and the ability to quickly change the firing rate. Playing music doesn't interest me at all. The greater portability would be helpful on occasion but my coil is so big that I don't move it around much anyway.

When I start seeing bulletproof high power DRSSTC designs is when I will become more interested in building one.

Subject: [TCML] Richard Burnett´s resonant charging ideas confirmed

I was finally able to confirm Richard Burnett´s ideas about resonant charging by both simulations and measurements. This is at my site www.sthlmteslacoil.se <http://www.sthlmteslacoil.se> now, as well as some recommendations on how to measure this. There are also some suggestions on how to measure cap voltage indirectly on the HV transformer primary side.

Please comment, if there still are any spark gap coilers left, in these days of solid state coils 😊
